Hey There Friends!
Last weekend I had the most amazing opportunity through Blog & Tweet NH. Karlene from Kickstart Fitness & Nutrition invited us to join her for Aerial Yoga! Aerial Yoga!! AKA the cool stuff from the pictures in the Athleta catalog that I thought I’d never get to try! I was so excited!
I was even more excited when Megan agreed to carpool with me. Yay- someone else to drive!
We were scheduled for half hour intervals and Megan and I arrived in time to watch Candra do her thing. I think it made it easier for me to watch someone else first.
Karlene uses practice silks, which are made of parachute material and have handles. This made it a lot easier for me to feel comfortable suspended from the ground. She has 2 sets so she can have 2 people actively training at a time. There are some couches right by the practice area though and Karlene is happy to work with groups. I can definitely see this as a fun girls’ night out!
We did some warmups in the silks, using gravity to help us get deeper than usual. Then we did a series of poses including Warrior 1, Warrior 2, and Goddess. We played around with splits and bridges. My hips have been really tight lately so I asked Karlene for suggestions and we did some great hip openers. Check this out:
Ok, if you’ve ever seen me in practice or stretching you’ll know that’s the deepest split I have ever done. Doing yoga suspended like this changes the depth of the pose as well as making it gentler on areas like knees and hands which can sometimes be impacted by the pressure of the floor.
I had a really, really great time. Karlene also offers personal training, pilates, and online fitness training along with a variety of e-books. (She currently has a book bundle sale that I’ve ordered) I wish Karlene was closer so I could participate more often. And so that we could just hang out. I’ve already given her contact info to Heather for a future fitness outing. If you’re in the Sandown NH area definitely check out Kickstart Fitness & Nutrition, especially Aerial Yoga.
Is there a fitness activity you’ve seen in a catalog or online that you’d love to try but doubt you’ll have a chance? Have you ever tried Aerial Yoga?
