The folks at Morning Pep were kind enough to send me some xylitol to try so I used it in this recipe. I like that xylitol is made from birch trees and is a reduced calorie sweetener, not a zero calorie sweetener. I like that Morning Pep makes their xylitol from birch trees here in the US rather than overseas. My dad used to work in the logging industry so I’m a fan of products that put Americans to work in farming and logging.
I think it’s important to mention that Spenser does not get to enjoy this treat, or anything else (like sugar free gum) containing xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It’s healthy for humans (actually strangely good for our teeth, which is why you’ll find it in a lot of toothpastes) but dogs’ livers can’t break it down. That’s ok though, Spenser probably gets a couple treats too many anyway;-)
Protein Chocolate Chia Pudding
3 tbsp chia seeds
3/4 cup almond or cashew milk
1 scoop protein powder
1 (heaping) tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tbsp xylitol
Add all ingredients to a blender. Mix well then pour into a container with a lid. Refrigerate overnight.
Note: I received free xylitol from Morning Pep in exchange for a review. My opinions are my own.
