Better Than Instant Almost-Instant Hot Cocoa

October 11, 2017 By Kristen 4 Comments

You are going to love how delicious, easy, and customizable this hot cocoa recipe is.

It wasn’t until after I shared it in the comments of one of Janae’s posts that I realized I’ve never shared it here.

This is my go-to hot cocoa recipe. This used to be called “weekend hot cocoa” until I realized it takes 30 seconds longer than instant hot cocoa. Then I stopped buying instant hot cocoa.

This is the hot cocoa Girlie had almost every morning last school year. I can literally make this through blurry eyes while taking my first desperate sips of coffee. You can easily make this and say goodbye to those pre-prepared packets of who-knows-what.

Better Than Instant Almost-Instant Hot Cocoa (Makes 1 small mug. Double for a large mug.)

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup milk (or cream for special occasions)

  1. Add cocoa powder and sugar to a microwave safe mug. Add a splash (maybe 2 tbsp) of water.
  2. Microwave for 10 seconds. (11 if that’s easier on the am eyes)
  3. Stir well.
  4. Add milk.
  5. Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
  6. Stir well.

That’s it! Feel free to tinker with the proportions if you like things less chocolatey. You can top with marshmallows or whipped cream and even add a peppermint stick if you’re feeling festive. You can make it an adult beverage by adding a little peppermint or chocolate liquor. You can use whatever dairy or non-dairy milk works for you. You can even try using stevia or other sugar replacements.

Just don’t buy those silly packets.

-Kristen

Ooh how delicious! Love that you use whole ingredients. A little sprinkling of cinnamon or pumpkin spiced mixed with the cocoa powder and sugar before pouring the milk sounds extra cozy šŸ™‚

[…] I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners but had read so many recipes by bloggers I respect that include stevia that I was willing to give it a shot. I still haven’t actually tried cooking with stevia yet (I didn’t want to healthify any holiday baking).Ā  I have really liked using it in my homemade hot cocoa.Ā  […]
