Monday Morning Coffee Break – Happy Birthday Mom!

June 22, 2020 By Kristen 1 Comment

Happy Monday Friends! Today is my Mom’s 81st Birthday!! I wish that I could share a post of all fun lighthearted links for her but… she’s never been one to shy away from current events. When I was growing up we got 2 newspapers a day and watched/discussed the evening news during family dinner! With that in mind, while I am going mostly with my trend of starting light and getting heavier I can’t promise only one really “heavy” article per week.

In honor of my Mom’s birthday, here are fun lists of 21 Completely Subjective Rules for Raising Teenage Girls and another one for Raising Teenage Boys. Both are from Catherine Newman and published at Cup of Jo.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department has been looking into the disappearance of Carole Baskin’s missing husband with fresh eyes, thanks to the national obsession with Tiger King. Here’s the local news update.

While I normally consider Women’s Day to be pretty problematic this list of 15 Kid-Friendly Movies to build a conversation on race and racism is a good one.

NY Magazine had an amazing Longview Interview with Representative John Lewis. He and my mom are “of an age”.

Speaking of interviews with elders… this one with James Baldwin from 1968 rings so current… if it weren’t for some of the slang and some of the locations you’d think they were talking today. Which is a painful reminder of how far we haven’t come as a nation.

This will be the hardest post for a lot of you to get through. Some will hate the beginning, others the middle, others the ending. It will all depend on your particular beliefs, background, and ideology. PLEASE read the whole thing with an open mind. As someone who has lived with and worked with police, who has worked in the criminal justice system, and has lived in both small towns and cities… it rings really really true. https://medium.com/@OfcrACab/confessions-of-a-former-bastard-cop-bb14d17bc759

So, Happy Monday, Happy Father’s Day (a day late) and Happy Birthday to my Mom!!

I’d love to hear what you think about the posts above! Also, as always, if you have something you’ve read (or even better!) written that you think I’d like to read or share please share it with me!

-Kristen

The sad truth is that Baldwin interview could have just as easily been made today. But we need to KEEP talking about these things. These conversations need to happen because that is the only way we can grow and change. Happy birthday to your mom! <3
